Investigating the Impact of Computer-Mediated Social Support on Patient Empowerment in Chronic Disease Management by Using Large Language Models
Abstract
As healthcare systems continue to evolve, understanding how digital health tools like Online Health Consultation (OHC) platforms contribute to patient empowerment and self-management becomes increasingly important. In this study, we explore the intricate dynamics between computer-mediated social support, patient empowerment, and self-management in the context of chronic disease management by using large language models. We gathered 10022 full consultation records from 923 different doctors between 2022 and 2023. Our findings indicate that both informational and emotional support provided through OHC platforms significantly enhance patient empowerment, thereby positively influencing self-management practices. In addition, disease severity moderates the relationship between social support, with stronger effects in the group of cancer patients compared to those with diabetes. Findings of this study have the potential to inform the development of more effective digital health interventions, ultimately contributing to better management of chronic diseases and addressing the challenges posed by these conditions on both individual and societal levels.
